The anaerobic digestion industry could reduce the world’s current greenhouse gas emissions by 10-13%.

“The anaerobic digestion industry has the potential to reduce the world’s current greenhouse gas emissions by 10-13%”, David Newman, President of the World Biogas Association (WBA) and former CEO of Greenpeace in Italy, said today. He was addressing delegates from all over Europe at the European Biogas Association (EBA) annual conference and referring to the WBA’s Global Potential of Biogas report.

Renewable biomethane is already as important as solar power in addressing the decarbonisation and de-fossilisation of Europe’s energy requirements was the message from Harm Grobrügge, President of the European Biogas Association, as he opened the conference today. He said “Already there are over 18,000 biogas / biomethane plants across the EU, providing 70,000 jobs. The industry also has huge growth potential.”

Delegates from almost every EU country attended this morning’s session which focussed on national plans for global results. Italy, in particular, forecast strong growth in biogas and biomethane production with further announcements to be made.

The conference continues until Friday 4 September, covering themes of how renewable gas is an important part of the EU’s green transition and how it will shape energy systems in the future .
